The Local Harvest Market

The Local Harvest Market

Dan, owner/founder and passionate leader of Local Harvest.

We had the privilege of stopping in at The Local Harvest Market this week, and also getting a little tour of the farm and facilities. The Local Harvest Market is a self sustaining market that produces and sells products grown only on their farm land.

Their mission is to “grow and produce quality food, educate the public on the importance of local food systems and promote the development of local agriculture and food production.”

Having never been to the Local Harvest, we had some expectations of what to expect of their produce and fresh baked bread. The market not only lived up to those expectations, but were superseded by Dan, the owner/founder, who took us on a quick tour of the farm and facilities. The most exciting thing we learned on that tour was that the Local Harvest is an ‘open’ farm. During business hours (Mon - Sat/9am - 6pm) all visitors are welcome to wander around the farm and see everything in action!

The Local Harvest believes in sustainable growing, all year long. Everything they sell on site was grown on site. Vegetables are available seasonally and they use “sustainable growing methods and natural biological controls to produce the finest, freshest and chemical-free foods.” They do use cool storage and greenhouses to help prolong the life and availability of some of their produce, but otherwise what’s available in the market is whatever is available in season.

Aside from the great produce grown on their land, the Local Harvest also has it’s own bakery on-site that uses a wood-fired oven to bake their enticing breads, including wood-fired pizza. The smell of fresh bread that wafts through the market would require a lot of willpower to avoid, which no one would want to employ with the promise of such delicious, good, handmade, freshly baked bread.

The market also offers product from Anita’s Organic Mill, and we found some fresh cold-pressed juice from The HABIT Project.
