Lise Oakley is the Executive Director of the Chilliwack Mural Festival. Lise was born and raised in Chilliwack and moved back to Chilliwack in 2021 with her young son and partner. She owns Good Creative, a creative agency, is the executive director for the Chilliwack Arts Council, and is a sessional instructor in the design department at UFV. Lise is bilingual (francophone) with Acadian roots, has a degree in Communications from SFU, and has many stories to tell from the 10 years of playing in a band. She enjoys re-building retro 90s mountain bikes, photography, gardening and taking long walks at Island 22 with her dog Mac. We are glad she is back in Chilliwack helping to build a better community.

YMCA BC expands the Growing Mindfully program to Chilliwack to help even more 8–12-year-olds be more active and cope with anxiety, stress and emotion regulation 

YMCA BC is excited to expand its Growing Mindfully program to the Chilliwack community, which is a program currently running in Kamloops, Prince George, and Coquitlam to help youth 8-12 years old become more active and manage anxiety, stress, worries and emotion regulation. Made possible through the funding support provided by the YMCA BC Foundation, the Growing Mindfully program joins the list of other mental wellness supports YMCA BC offers including Foundry, Y Mind Youth and Y Mind Teen and Mind Medicine. Through this expansion, more children will have the chance to learn strategies to manage anxiety, stress, worries and regulate their emotions through evidence-based psychoeducational support groups led by trained professionals.

Growing Mindfully is a free physical and mental wellness program for youth 8-12 years old, to support youth with being more active and learning healthy coping strategies. This group consists of a mental wellness component where participants learn tools and strategies to work through difficult emotions and a physical activity component where children learn physical literacy skills and the importance of being active in a fun and supportive environment.

5th Annual Corke Classic - Cheam Mountain Golf Course

Join Us for the 5th Annual Corke Classic: Golfing for a Cause, Supporting Hematology/BMT Patient Support Fund!

In December 2020, David Corke, Head Coach of a high-performance soccer program at Coastal FC, faced a sudden and devastating turn of events. What started as back pain while coaching soccer led to a shocking diagnosis: leukemia. Amidst the challenges of chemotherapy and isolation during a pandemic, David found solace in the care and expertise of Dr. Maryse Power and the healthcare teams at VGH.

Despite the grueling treatment, David persevered, buoyed by the support of his family and the compassionate care he received. Now, in remission since April 2021, David is deeply grateful for the dedication of his care team. To express his gratitude and support others facing similar challenges, David, along with his family and friends, launched the "Corke Classic" fundraising campaign.

The "Corke Classic" began modestly in 2021 with 60 golfers, raising funds to assist patients and their families with everyday expenses. With overwhelming community support, the event has grown, attracting 180 golfers and raising $20,000 in 2023 alone. 

For David, this initiative is more than a fundraiser; it's a way to give back and provide support to those navigating the difficult journey of cancer treatment.

Meet The Spot – Chilliwack’s newest mental health-focused teen center, located in the heart of Chilliwack’s vibrant District 1881. Uniquely designed to serve the needs of all teens in the community, The Spot offers a welcoming environment that blends support, growth, and fun.

By day, The Spot features three private counseling rooms, offering individual and family counseling sessions open to all teens in Chilliwack. With a focus on creating a safe and inclusive space, The Spot’s counseling services provide teens and their families with the tools to navigate life’s challenges and strengthen their connections.

After school, The Spot transforms into a vibrant, cutting-edge space exclusively for teens on the autism spectrum. Chilliwack - Ice Hawks Ringette Program

Ice Hawks Ringette Program

The Ice Hawks Indigenous ringette program is open to youth aged 7-21 who identify as Indigenous. Held at the Chilliwack Coliseum on Wednesdays over ten weeks in the fall for camp 1 and ten weeks in the winter for camp 2, participants learn to skate, get to play ringette with each other, and interact with other ringette players and coaches. When they arrive to the rink, players pick up a full set of ringette gear to borrow and receive a free skate rental.  

Since 2018 the Chilliwack Ringette Association has been building a relationship with Skwá First Nation and the Indigenous Sport and Recreation Council (iSPARC) who have created a program together called “Ice Hawks Ringette.” The program introduces Indigenous youth to ringette in a low-barrier, inclusive, and culturally safe environment. There are no costs for the participants. 

The collabroation started with an outdoor gym ringette session held in a lacrosse box and has developed over the years to include the acquisition of gym ringette equipment for the Skwá First Nation community centre, and more recently, to on-ice learn-to-play camps.

In 2023 the program sought and received funding to purchase 20 full sets of new gear so that participants can be equipped and fully immersed into ringette for the 2024-25 camps. Funding was made possible through the support of Sport Canada through Ringette Canada’s Indigenous Ringette Pilot Project. The project’s goal is not only to support the Ice Hawks program’s equipment needs, but also to take what’s learned in Chilliwack and apply it in other communities who would like similar programs.  

The Ice Hawks team consists of Elia Lockhart, Stella James, Shannon Bettles, Dyan Kinar, Mike Kinar, Sidney Crowe, Emma Kinar, Aveline Chris, and Breanne Josephine. Funding and in-kind support is provided by iSPARC, Ringette BC, Ringette Canada, Lower Mainland Ringette League, Chilliwack Ringette Association, and the Skwá First Nation.

Oliver Kladnik - Local Boxer Competing at the National Level

Local Business Owner and Boxer Represents B.C. at National Championships 

Oliver Kladnik, owner of Kladniko Fitness and a passionate advocate for boxing in the Fraser Valley, proudly represented British Columbia at Canada’s top boxing tournament, the National Championships. Competing in the highly competitive cruiserweight division, Kladnik advanced to the quarterfinals, where he faced Shawn McCarthy from Ontario in a closely contested bout. 

“I won the first round and lost the second, but unfortunately, due to injury, I decided to pull out after the second round,” shared Kladnik. “However, my opponent went on to win the tournament, which is a testament to his capabilities.” 

While the tournament did not end as hoped, Kladnik is optimistic about his recovery and looks forward to returning to the ring in the New Year. "I’m proud to have represented B.C. on such a big stage. My goal was to encourage boxers in the Fraser Valley to take the next step and compete in the sport," he said. 

Kladnik’s dedication to fostering local talent is already bearing fruit. “I have a handful of boxers at my gym preparing to have their first bouts in the New Year. Preparations are already underway, and I couldn’t be more excited to support them,” he added. 

Beyond competitive boxing, Kladnik has built a thriving community at Kladniko Fitness, where clients of all fitness levels work toward their goals with unwavering determination. “One thing I love more than boxing is working with people and helping them become healthier,” Kladnik said. “Whether coaching competitive boxers or training individuals with unique fitness goals, the hard work and camaraderie in our gym are what make us special. We hope to become a staple in Chilliwack.”

Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a mesmerizing negotiation of cause and effect. By A Thread weaves virtuosic acrobatics and intricate choreography through moments of confusion, hilarity, romance, playfulness, fear, and friendship, uncovering the threads of connection present in all relationships. More than mere bodies in space, By A Thread is an exploration of tensions physical, emotional, and relational.

Chilliwack Museum & Archives Call for Submissions for 5th Annual Community Art Show

The Chilliwack Museum & Archives is seeking creative pieces to display in the upcoming 5th Annual Community Art Show. The exhibition will be hosted from October 17, 2024, to January 18, 2025, and will feature imaginative works from the Community of Chilliwack.

“We started this initiative as a way to connect with our community during the COVID-19 lock down and it’s been so great to see it grow yearly into what it is today” says Shawna Dwyer, Executive Director “We look forward to welcoming new and returning artists of all ages for the show’s fifth year!”

Chilliwack Community members of any age, working in any medium, are welcome to submit their artwork. Work must be dropped off at the Chilliwack Museum with the submission form and media release by September 28, 2024.

Submissions must meet the following six requirements:

▪ Artists may submit up to three pieces and expect to see at least one piece included in the exhibition. Additional works selected will be dependent on total submissions and display space.

▪ Artwork must be accompanied by a completed submission form and signed media release.

▪ All submissions must be labeled legibly with the full name of the artist and title of the artwork. An artist signature is not sufficient.

▪ Wall mounted artworks (photographs, drawings, canvases, etc.) must be submitted with a proper hanging mechanism; with “D” hooks and a picture wire.

▪ Submissions are limited to 60cm x 60cm. Oversized submissions will be considered on a case-by-case basis and are dependent on available space.

▪ Submissions may be of any medium including, but not limited to collage, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, painting, drawing, photography, etc.

The Chilliwack Museum and Archives reserves the right to refuse pieces based on size, medium, and content. Pieces that are not chosen for display must be picked up immediately. Full details of submission, display, and pick up requirements can be found at the link below.
