Mountain Plastic: Powered by Himalayan Life: VIP Event with Dr. Joyce Azzam
Joyce Azzam has climbed 28 mountains around the world, holds a Ph.D. in Conservation Architecture and is launching Everest Voices, an initiative to clean up Mt. Everest. She became the first Lebanese woman to complete the Seven Summits when she successfully reached the top of Everest in May 2019.
Azzam was recently named the Himalayan Life Mountain Plastic Ambassador and will be in Vancouver to share stories about the shocking reality of plastic pollution in the Himalayas and how Mountain Plastic plans to address this issue.
Each day over 900 tons of waste is produced in Kathmandu, Nepal. Unfortunately, this waste has now encroached into the stunning Himalayas due to increasing environmental pressures from tourism. Two million visitors are expected to visit Nepal in 2020 which will produce around 80 million discarded plastic bottles.
Mountain Plastic powered by Himalayan Life (mountain-plastic.com), is a social enterprise based in Pokhara, Nepal, committed to the sustainable transformation of people and the planet. Recycling over 60 million plastic bottles annually, Mountain Plastic fights against pollution and helps protect and restore vital ecosystems.
Himalayan Life (himalayanlife.com) is a charity that exists to enhance the lives of children and youth in the Himalayas by providing shelter, activity programs, schools, training, and earthquake relief, with particular focus on those who lack basic socio-economic structures.
Under the direction of Daniel Burgi, founder and CEO of Himalayan Life, they have been protecting, nurturing, and educating disadvantaged children in the Himalayas for over 20 years.
In April 2020 both Azzam and Burgi together with reformed street boys from Pokhara will begin the Everest Base Camp Expedition for Himalayan Life, a life-changing adventure to help recover Mountain Plastic at Everest. This expedition will also raise funds to support the HL Vocational Training Program.
