How to Show Up on Google When Someone Searches for a Local Business Like Yours

Imagine someone in Chilliwack pulls out their phone and searches:

“electrician near me”

“best coffee shop in Chilliwack”

“Chilliwack massage therapist”

“realtor in Sardis”

Does your business show up? For a local business, being found on Google can be just as important as being active on social media. Maybe more. The good news is you do not need to be an SEO expert to start improving your chances.

What Is Local SEO?

Local SEO, or local search engine optimization, is the work you do to help your business appear when people search online for a product or service in your area.

Think about the way you use Google yourself. You probably do not search for “restaurant.” You search for “restaurant in Chilliwack” or “restaurant near me.” Google then tries to figure out which businesses nearby are the best match.

Local SEO helps Google understand that your business is one of them.

How Can a Small Business Improve Its Local SEO?

Start with the basics. Make sure your business name, location, phone number, hours, services, and website are accurate everywhere they appear online.

Your Google Business Profile is especially important. Keep it updated, add current photos, collect genuine customer reviews, and make sure you have selected the right business categories.

Then look at your website. Does it actually say where you work? It sounds obvious, but we see plenty of beautiful websites that make it surprisingly difficult to figure out where the business is located. If you serve Chilliwack, say Chilliwack. If you also work in Abbotsford, Agassiz, Hope, or elsewhere in the Fraser Valley, include that information where it makes sense too. Do not awkwardly repeat city names in every sentence. Write for people first.

Does Blogging Help Local SEO?

It can.

A good blog gives you more opportunities to answer the questions your customers are already searching for. A landscaper could write about when to prune certain plants in the Fraser Valley. A realtor could explain the different neighbourhoods in Chilliwack. A contractor could answer common questions about renovating older Chilliwack homes. Useful, specific content gives Google more information about what you know, what you do, and where you do it. More importantly, it gives potential customers a reason to find you.

Do Google Reviews Help?

Reviews are another important part of your local online presence. Ask happy customers to leave honest feedback and make asking for reviews part of your regular process. You do not need 500 reviews overnight. A steady stream of genuine reviews is far more realistic and useful. And respond to them. It takes a minute and shows people that someone is paying attention.

Do You Need to Pay to Show Up on Google?

Not necessarily.

Google Ads can put your business in front of people quickly, but organic local visibility is something you can work on without paying for every click. Your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, useful content, and consistent business information all contribute to a stronger local presence. It takes time, but the work can continue helping people find you long after you make the initial improvements.

Start by Googling Your Own Business

Here is your homework.

Search your business name. Then search for the service you offer followed by “Chilliwack.” Look at what comes up:

  • Is your information accurate?

  • Does your business appear?

  • Does your website clearly explain what you do and where you do it?

  • What do your competitors have that you do not?

You do not have to fix everything today. Find one thing you can improve and start there.
