Skip the Vedder Trail: 5 Quieter Walks Around Chilliwack
Don’t get us wrong — the Vedder Rotary Trail is popular for a reason.
But on a sunny day? It can get busy fast.
Luckily, Chilliwack has no shortage of quieter places to get outside, stretch your legs, and enjoy the views without weaving through crowds. Whether you’re looking for peaceful wetlands, mountain views, or a slower pace, here are a few local walks worth checking out.
1. North Dyke Trail
If you’re looking for wide open views and a quieter atmosphere, the North Dyke Trail is hard to beat.
Running alongside the Fraser River, this trail offers big skies, mountain backdrops, farmland scenery, and a lot more breathing room than some of the more popular walking routes in town.
It’s especially beautiful in the morning or near sunset.
🐶 Dogs are allowed on leash.
2. Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve
This is one of those places that feels peaceful almost immediately.
The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve features flat walking paths, wetlands, wildlife viewing, and plenty of shaded areas. Depending on the season, you might spot herons, eagles, turtles, salmon, or even a beaver if you’re lucky.
It’s also one of the best easy walks in Chilliwack for families.
⚠️ Important: dogs are only permitted on the main Centre Trail and connecting dyke trails. Most internal nature reserve trails do not allow dogs in order to protect wildlife habitats. (Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve)
3. Browne Creek Wetlands
Quiet, underrated, and surprisingly calming.
Browne Creek Wetlands is the kind of place many locals drive past without realizing how nice it actually is. The gravel paths wind through wetland habitat with mountain views peeking through the trees.
If you’re looking for somewhere slower-paced and less crowded, this is a great option.
🐶 Dogs are generally allowed on leash.
4. Cultus Lake Forest Trails
Most people think of Cultus Lake as a summer beach destination, but the surrounding forest trails are worth exploring too.
On warmer days, the shaded forest paths can feel much cooler and quieter than the lakeshore itself. There are several easy walking routes throughout the area that make for a perfect slower morning or afternoon outing.
Bonus: they’re especially nice after light rain.
🐶 Most trails in the area are dog-friendly on leash.
5. Cheam Lake Wetlands
Easy, scenic, and great for all ages.
Cheam Lake Wetlands features a short loop trail with boardwalk sections, birdwatching opportunities, and beautiful mountain views throughout the walk. It’s one of the more accessible nature walks in the area and works well for kids, grandparents, or anyone looking for a relaxed outdoor outing.
Bring binoculars if you have them.
🐶 Dogs are not permitted in the wetlands park in order to protect sensitive wildlife habitat.
The Vedder Trail will always be a Chilliwack favourite, but sometimes it’s nice to switch things up.
One of the best parts about living here is how many quiet little outdoor spots are tucked around the valley — often just a few minutes from town.
So next time the trails are packed, maybe try somewhere new.
You might end up finding a new favourite walk.
